The next time you step on board could very well be your last chance to experience the Riverboat at Marina South Pier.
Come March 2019, our lease on the Riverboat’s berthing space at Marina South Pier is due to expire. We have been told that there is no chance of renewal as sea traffic at the Pier is greatly increasing, and the berth we are occupying will have to be used for other purposes.
Marina South Pier has been our home for the past thirteen years, after leaving our original berthing site at Sentosa in 2005 to make way for the construction of Resorts World Sentosa. The RWS Crane Dance now sits at the very spot where we used to be berthed.
During our stint at Marina South Pier, we saw the surrounding area transform from an undeveloped corner of the island to Singapore’s bustling new downtown district. We remember the days where Marina South was known as the go-to place for kite flying, remote control car racing, bowling, and cheap steamboat restaurants. There was no Marina Bay Sands, no Marina Bay Financial Centre, no Marina Bay Cruise Centre, no Marina Coastal Expressway and no Marina South Pier MRT station. The only way to get to us, apart from driving, was SBS service 402 which operated at intervals of 25 minutes!
We survived the ‘dark ages’ of dusty and noisy construction as the area was being developed, and proudly witnessed the metamorphosis of Singapore’s city skyline right before our eyes. The proverbial ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ came quite literally for us with the completion of two tunnels at our doorstep – the Marina Coastal Expressway tunnel in 2013, and the extension of the underground North-South MRT line to reach Marina South Pier itself. Accessibility improved, and so did business. Sales more than doubled almost instantly, and we saw a good increase in the number of private and corporate functions, as well as weddings on board.
We consider ourselves very blessed indeed to have had these last few ‘fat’ years at Marina South Pier after having gone through the earlier ‘lean’ years. While we would definitely love to stay right where we are for a few more years, it is also clear that this location can no longer accommodate us and it is time to move on.
The Next Chapter
We have spent the past year or so exploring possible berthing sites all around Singapore’s coastline, as well as opportunities in the neighbouring countries. Five sites have so far been shortlisted as most favourable based on the following requirements…
- Calm waters, for the comfort of diners and guests.
- Ease of access, with public transport and sufficient parking space.
- Electricity, water, and sewage hookups within close distance.
- Length of lease to be a minimum of five years.
- Maritime safety.
While we continue our discussions with the landlords of these five shortlisted sites, we also invite you, our customers, friends and the general public, to participate in our relocation project by suggesting where you would like to see us move to next year!
Do share your thoughts in the space below (coming soon). If you have any referrals, or represent a property where we could potentially berth at, please do give our CEO Daryl a call at 62785775. You may also view our Relocation 2019 General Booklet here for more information.
