Santa Fe Tex-Mex Grill, the pride and joy of Stewords Riverboat with its flagship outlet located on our Main Deck, turns nineteen this July!
Among the first to bring true-blue Texan-Mexican cuisine to the Singapore dining scene, Santa Fe opened the doors of its first outlet along Boat Quay in 1999. Our founder Eric Saw fondly reminisces…
A Message from our Founder, Eric Saw
“Santa Fe All-American Tex-Mex Grill, which was our full name back then, had its official grand opening on Sunday 4 July 1999, coinciding with the US Independance Day. Our restaurant occupied two stories of three shophouses at 73~75 Boat Quay. We also had a large alfresco dining area along the Singapore River plus some seating at our shopfront verandah.
“On that day, we had a roast leg of beef over a large outdoor rotisserie. Aung Htay (our former head chef, current kitchen advisor) may remember if it was a gas or charcoal fired unit.
“Our then chairman Prof Winston Elliott, who is also my mentor, gave a short speech with many invited friends & business associates present. That day was a start of a multi-coloured journey for me and my family.
Daryl (Eric’s son, who is now running the business) was only twelve years old, and often together with our staff, would help prepare drinks etc. His main “role” then was Artist & Decorator. He did beautiful chalk-on-blackboard drawings of our building and food items which were hung over our bar and which drew admiring comments from guests.
“We operated at Boat Quay so that we could learn the ropes of running a restaurant as we had, the year before, in 1998, bought the Stewords Riverboat, then known as Sentosa Riverboat. The Riverboat was then in a shipyard in Tuas, undergoing retrofitting work. Santa Fe stayed at Boat Quay for three years (1999 ~2002), had a second outlet on the Riverboat at Sentosa when it was ready in 2001.
“Santa Fe has indeed come a long way. Nineteen years saw it metamorphose from a little-known but popular restaurant to become a lifestyle venue with expanded event and private function capabilities. From a cuisine perspective, Santa Fe’s culinary team has not only grown in its capability to churn out high quality authentic international cuisine under the Riverboat brand name, but has also adopted modernity under the watchful and creative eye of Daryl.
“On the occasion of Santa Fe’s 19th Anniversary, we, the Saw Family, salute all our colleagues, past and present, who have journeyed with us through thick and thin.
“To the pioneers who have grown old together with us, a big thank you for your service and friendship.
“To the ‘younger’ ones, we look forward to the invigorating injection of new blood that will come from you, but would also remind you to tap on the experience and wisdom of the older generation who have ‘been there, done that’.
“We are close to a new chapter especially with our Riverboat’s lease at Marina South Pier expiring in March 2019. New horizons await us. New challenges as well as new opportunities lie ahead. Take on the challenges head on, and reap the rewards of the new opportunities.
“This reflection would not be complete if mention is not made of the background contributions of the two ‘Ma’ams’ in their own special and unique ways – Ma’am Olive (Eric’s sister who helps in accounts and admin) and Ma’am Alice (Eric’s wife). They have put in countless hours in areas where only they could have done what they did. Little known, little seen, unsung heroines.
“I trust there will be renewals in leadership as the older Saws step back and focus on new ventures, and the younger Saws – Elizabeth, Veronica, and Marcia step forward, together with Daryl, press on towards a bright and shiny future.
“The LORD bless and keep you, the LORD make His face shine on you, and be gracious unto you.”
– Eric’s message to the team, on 1 July 2018
