Set sail with us on our fourth ‘voyage’ around the globe, as we discover some of the world’s favourite wine regions and styles without even leaving Marina South Pier. Taste up to 50 wines over a series of nine events from April to December 2018. 

Happening every second Thursday of the month, Riverboat Wine Voyages provides a fun and relaxed social space where wine lovers can gather to taste and learn about a wide range of wines. Whether you are a wine noob or a seasoned wine aficionado, just beginning to explore or already a committed lifelong alcoholic, chances are you will make some like-minded friends on these ‘voyages’ to have many a grape evening with!

This series of wine events is hosted by Akimi Yeo, who is a certified Wine Specialist and Whisky Ambassador. Akimi has been increasingly active in the Singapore wine scene in recent years, conducting both private and corporate wine tastings as well as providing training and consultation for F&B professionals.

This Session: Australia (Barossa)

Sail along the North Para River in South Australia, as we explore the wines of the famed Barossa Valley located just 60km northeast of Adelaide city center. Best known for its powerful, full-bodied red wines made from the Shiraz grape varietal, Barossa does also produce great wines from other grapes including Riesling grown in the higher-elevation, cooler areas known as the Barossa Ranges.

To paint a worthy picture of this prolific wine region, we turn to a modern and trendy wine producer known as Two Hands, established just because two guys started talking at a friend’s engagement party in 1999. Their ‘Picture Series’ features some truly serious wines with playful and irreverent labeling, making it fun and approachable to the masses.

Of course, a tasting of Barossa will never be complete without some heavy duty Shiraz. From the cheerful, enjoyable Fields of Joy Shiraz to the no-nonsense, in-your-face Gnarly Dudes Shiraz, Two Hands showcases the two extremities of Barossa Shiraz which caters to all taste preferences.

Among the new-world wine countries, Australia really stands out in terms of quality, affordability, and most importantly developing a respect for the concept of ‘terroir’, allowing their wine to showcase the characteristics of the land itself. Two Hands is no doubt one of the up-and-coming wineries that have grasped this essential ethos of winemaking, and will in time to come be a worthy ambassador of the Barossa wine region.
