Set sail with us on our fourth ‘voyage’ around the globe, as we discover some of the world’s favourite wine regions and styles without even leaving Marina South Pier. Taste up to 50 wines over a series of nine events from April to December 2018.
Happening every second Thursday of the month, Riverboat Wine Voyages provides a fun and relaxed social space where wine lovers can gather to taste and learn about a wide range of wines. Whether you are a wine noob or a seasoned wine aficionado, just beginning to explore or already a committed lifelong alcoholic, chances are you will make some like-minded friends on these ‘voyages’ to have many a grape evening with!
This series of wine events is hosted by Akimi Yeo, who is a certified Wine Specialist and Whisky Ambassador. Akimi has been increasingly active in the Singapore wine scene in recent years, conducting both private and corporate wine tastings as well as providing training and consultation for F&B professionals.
This Session: Burgundy
Burgundy, like Bordeaux, is among the most famous of old-world wine regions, and has become a benchmark of quality and a stylistic reference for winemakers internationally. Though producing only a quarter of the volume of wine that Bordeaux’s produces, Burgundy has earned a great reputation and respect through their top-quality Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs which exude charm and elegance.
Begin with a glass of bubbles, in the form of a Cremant de Bourgogne – Burgundy’s answer to Champagne, made in the same traditional method, and very much the same grape varietals even.
Domaine Pigneret & Fils Cremant de Bourgogne NV
Moving on to the whites, taste a classic Chardonnay from Chablis, a town northwest of the main Burgundy wine region. Chablis is home to 40 premier cru vineyards, and the Kimmeridgian soil here imparts a flinty characteristic to the wine, which makes it particularly fresh and delightful. We also try another white wine from made the Mercurey Blanc varietal, which is Burgundy’s second white grape.
Jean Marc Brocard Chablis Vieilles Vignes 2015, Chablis
Chateau de Chamirey Mercurey Blanc 2013, Cote Chalonnaise
And finally, taste the legendary Bourgogne Pinot Noirs. We selected two examples of this dainty wine, one each from Cote de Nuits up north, and from Cote de Beaune down south. See if you can taste the subtle differences which characterize the two subregions!
Domaine Cornu Pernand-Vergelesses Rouge 2013, Cote de Nuits
Domaine Cornu Ladoix Bis Roussot Premier Cru 2014, Cote de Beaune
