Set sail with us on our fourth ‘voyage’ around the globe, as we discover some of the world’s favourite wine regions and styles without even leaving Marina South Pier. Taste up to 50 wines over a series of nine events from April to December 2018.

Happening every second Thursday of the month, Riverboat Wine Voyages provides a fun and relaxed social space where wine lovers can gather to taste and learn about a wide range of wines. Whether you are a wine noob or a seasoned wine aficionado, just beginning to explore or already a committed lifelong alcoholic, chances are you will make some like-minded friends on these ‘voyages’ to have many a grape evening with!

This series of wine events is hosted by Akimi Yeo, who is a certified Wine Specialist and Whisky Ambassador. Akimi has been increasingly active in the Singapore wine scene in recent years, conducting both private and corporate wine tastings as well as providing training and consultation for F&B professionals.

This Session: Bordeaux

Perhaps the most influential wine region of the world, Bordeaux has over the centuries come to be an international benchmark of wine quality. From the much-respected 1855 Classification, to the more recent Cru Bourgeois and St Emilion Grand Cru classifications, Bordeaux wine legislators have been challenging local chateaus churn out top quality wines year after year.

Bordeaux is located in southwestern France, where the Dordogne and Garonne rivers meet to form the Gironde estuary. These waterways generally divide Bordeaux into three sections aptly known as the right bank, left bank, and ‘entre-deux-mers’ which refers to the extremely fertile area where the rivers meet.

On this voyage, we begin with a Bordeaux white of the Sauvignon Blanc varietal, and a generic Bordeaux red which is usually a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in varying proportions.

Chateau Maison Neuve Blanc, Cotes de Blaye
Chateau de la Bouyere Rouge, Bordeaux

We then move on to wines of more specific appellations of origin, which usually translates into better quality, complexity and ageworthiness. Try three wines from the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated left bank, and one from the esteemed St Emilion region on the right bank.

Chateau de Rivereau, Cotes de Bourg
Chateau Les Moines, Medoc
Vivens par Chateau Dufort Vivens, Margaux
Chateau Patarabet, St Emilion

As a special bonus to kick-start Season 4, try a whisky finished in Sauternes cask. Sauternes is a sweet wine appellation of Bordeaux, which will be featured in our Sweet Wines voyage on 13 September… so stay tuned!
