ABOUT THE WINERY
Groot Constantia was founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, the first governer of the Dutch settlement at Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. His ardent love for wine, coupled with his solid viticultural knowledge from back in the Netherlands, led him to acquire a prime parcel of land with favourable soils and mountain slopes gently cooled by the ocean breezes of False Bay to establish his first wine farm, which he named Constantia. Since then, his estate grew and grew, and Groot Constantia now owns a staggering 165 hectares of land today, of which a good 90 are planted with vines for making wine and brandy.
Over the years, Groot Constantia’s wines gained a strong following the world over, and they particularly received international acclaim for their sweet “Constantia Wyn”, now known as Grand Constance, which we will have the privilege to taste at this dinner. One of the rich, sweet wine’s greatest fans was certainly Napoleon, who ordered 30 bottles a month while in exile in St Helena before his death in 1821!
Today, Groot Constantia continues to be an award-winning winery in South Africa, and was rated the Top South African Wine Producer 2016 by SAWi (South African Wine Index). Their estate is also one of the country’s most visited tourist attractions.
SPECIAL GUEST – GRANT NEWTON
We are also privileged to have with us at this dinner a special guest speaker Grant Newton, who is a director on the Cape Town tourism board, and also the global Sales & Marketing Manager of Groot Constantia.
Grant, seen here in front of the historic Manor House which is part of the Groot Constantia estate, has vast experience in the food and wine scene, having run his own restaurant back in the 90’s. He is also extremely passionate about promoting wine tourism in South Africa.
